It can sometimes be difficult to appreciate special achievements in real time, but such a moment came last week after LeBron James broke a record long believed to be unbreakable: passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 38,387 points to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

“He’s 38!” is a refrain that’s become almost a cliche to NBA viewers in this, James’s 20th season of dominance. It’s mentioned pretty much every time he steps on the best) players in the league in every year of his storied career.
