WIRING A LAYOUT FOR DCC

In my January 2023 article, we looked at how to wire turnouts for DCC, but what about the rest of the layout? DCC is 'two wires', right? Yes, in its simplest form and for smaller layouts, this might be all that is needed. Connect the Command Station/Controller to the track and make sure all the turnouts are non-isolating and away we go. However, if planning something larger or for better reliability at an exhibition, a more sophisticated approach is recommended.

TRACK BUS

One of the first things to consider is to not rely on the rail joiners or fishplates to electrically connect each piece of track. Over time, especially in damp environments or where large fluctuations in temperature occur, the rail joiners can work loose or corrode, losing their electrical connectivity.
