Unlikely Guardian

The early afternoon sun shone brightly on the snow that covered the trees in the surrounding woods and must have been a good four feet deep on the ground. I clipped leashes on my three English cocker spaniels for a walk. We also had a guest. “Heidi!” I called. “Want to go out?”

I was taking care of my aunt’s Shetland sheepdog while she and my uncle were on vacation. Heidi jumped up in excitement. At six months old, she had a lot of energy. I’d been bringing animals home since I was a little girl, so my relatives knew I’d take good care of Heidi.
