Q I was given some old lead moulds by a friend and am considering using them to make my own lead weights for sea fishing. I’ve got some scrap lead to use. Is there anything I should know, or be aware of, before I get started? Grant Warren, Cheshire

IB says: Lead is a controlled substance when used in the workplace, as defined by Health and Safety Executive, due to the health risk it poses to those who may be exposed to it. The same risks are present whether you are mass producing or making lead weights for your personal use. I would strongly recommend a good read about what control measures you should put in place, even when making a few leads for personal use.

The website www.hse.gov.uk/lead will give you a good start. No lead weight is worth risking your or someone else’s health for, so if in doubt, take your scrap lead to an authorised dealer and invest the money in your local tackle shop.

The range of leads on the market is vast and increasing all the time as we learn more about alternative fishing tactics.
