Over one million people visit Tate Britain in London every year. Besides its rich art collections, a lesser-known feature of the gallery is the Tate Library and Archive, holding many fascinating documents from its history. As Jane Kennedy, Tate's records manager, explains, among those documents is a note from the building of the gallery in 1897 that was hidden in the building's dome until its discovery in 1985 - and reveals the names of five of the men who helped build the gallery.
