RESEARCH
A NEW STUDY from Lund University in Sweden has found that migratory birds need to take breaks not only to renew their energy levels, but to boost their immune system.
When birds migrate, larly stop in one place for a few days to rest and eat. It was previously thought that this was necessary for them to build up new fat reserves that provide fuel for their migration. However, the researchers have shown that birds also build up their immune systems during their migratory stopovers.
