Freedom through crochet lace

Study the history of crochet lace anywhere in the world, and it very quickly becomes a story about women and their ability to overcome hardships, innovate and communicate.

The cultures that create crochet lace exist in far-flung locations, and each use their own techniques and motifs. But, as we spoke to experts on three different types of traditional crochet lace – Irish Clones lace (a type of Irish lace), Turkish oya (or Turkish lace) and Indian Narsapur crochet lace – it became clear that all these traditions have two things in common: they’re almost exclusively created by women, and they empower the women who create them.
