ORDER, ORDER!

“There’s never an ordinary day here,” Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans explains when we first meet in Portcullis House in Westminster so that I can witness him at work. As it’s Commonwealth Day (13 March), there’s even more going on with several high commissioners and foreign ministers from Commonwealth nations visiting. The rest of the day is a blur. After gathering his team in his fragranced office (Fleur d’Oranger by La Mamounia) to discuss the day’s agenda as well as correspondence, Evans hosts a meeting on decarbonisation with coach operators. Later, he drops by a gathering of The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, before heading off to meet the Italian ambassador as part of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Italy. Then he takes his place in the Commons Chamber to oversee the second reading of the government’s Illegal Migration Bill. There, he commands proceedings, reminding MPs of the emotive nature of the topic and to be careful with their language so as not to inflame tensions. Talk of “invasions” and “criminals” from some members indicates his remarks aren’t always heeded and Evans has to work hard to control the debate.
