My project

Fitting a towbar can widen the scope for carrying kit in a motorhome or campervan with limited storage space and/or where payload is restricted. In my case, it was to carry a couple of e-bikes, but the addition of a towbar opens up plenty of other opportunities.

Visiting Witter/Westfalia’s towbar fitting centre on Deeside, I discovered what’s involved with fitting a towbar and got to see a new style.

WHY A TOWBAR?

Many motorhomers want to carry bikes or extra kit and, for many, a simple Fiamma bike rack bolted to the back panel can be the answer. On my campervan, a GRP panel has replaced the rear doors and this is unable to support bike rack loading.

Even if I had rear doors or owned a coachbuilt, I would have doubts about suspending two heavy bikes (around 50kg) from a rear panel or door. The dynamic loading on the door or panel
