AN APPROACH THAT’S HARD TO STOMACH
I write with reference to Welsh Labour’s proposals to introduce licences for gamebird release and the ‘Act Now’ campaign run by BASC [News, May issue].
Further restrictions on shooting and the countryside are a politically motivated campaign by the anti-shooting lobby to end practices they deem as unfit for the 21st century, and I fully support BASC to display a unified stance in resisting such interference and change. However, stewardship of the countryside for future generations comes with a great degree of responsibility. A minority of commercial shoots have exposed the industry to this attack by the Welsh government.
Why has the shooting world reached the point of larger and larger bags to satisfy the desires of a tiny minority of participants? On what planet can it be expected that a Labour government motivated by classist and anti-shooting agendas would not take aim at such practices? We need to take a long, hard look in the mirror and consider how, and if, we should defend such levels of shooting in the countryside, as what has been
