HEY! (EW)
We extend our apologies to readers expecting a review of AEW: All Access. At press time, that show was still premiering its earlier episodes. So, instead, we’re tackling another ongoing series meant to showcase AEW stars away from the squared circle.
The running gag around Ontario, Canada’s RJ City is that, despite his decades-long career in the ring, he’s rarely viewed as an active pro wrestler. Appropriately, City’s semi-improvised YouTube series, Hey! (EW), does little to dispel that notion.
This official AEW production sees the wry actor-turned-wrestler at the helm of short interviews with the company’s most intriguing figures. Britt Baker, Bryan Danielson, Taz, and William Regal are just a few of the big names to have visited the weekly series. Hey! (EW)’s deliberately awkward humor has proven popular with fans, inspiring 100,000+ viewers to tune in just about every week.
Without giving away too many of the jokes, we’ll note that City is a comically antagonistic interviewer in the tradition of Martin Short’s Jiminy Glick, Zach Galifianakis (Between Two Ferns), and, to a lesser extent, City’s fellow Canadian oddball, Nardwuar The Human Serviette. The host attempts to ruffle guests by asking pointed questions and intentionally fudging key details about his subjects’ careers.
