Working as a nail technician, my clients were often mesmerised by my sparkly pink nails.

‘Wow, they’re gorgeous,’ they beamed, before complimenting my outfit – a black top with the Barbie logo and a plaid pink skirt.

It was 2013 and, aged 31, I’d moved from Japan to the US a year earlier.

Everyone I met dubbed me the real-life Barbie girl.

It wasn’t a surprise, as by then I’d collected thousands of dollars worth of Barbie merch – from toys to home decor.
