It took a year or two of thorough planning (and saving) before six couples from Riebeeckstad – Jurie and Adriana Blom, Sarel and Ester Griesel, Pedro and Elize Erasmus, Frank and Desirè Korb, Gert and Christien Viljoen, and Pieter and Annette van der Merwe – were ready for a 25-day, 6 000 km tour of Namibia. In the group were a slew of off-road trailers: two Bush Lapas, a Conqueror Companion, a Sprite Tourer, and a LeBusha, but also a Sprite Swing and a Gypsy Rapsody. Pieter tells us more.
"After the first leg of 330 km on the first day, we ended up at Riverside Lodge near Ritchie, where Hansie and Elize Bekker from Parys joined us. The campsite is a delightful and tidy overnight facility along the Renoster River (you can, of course, stay longer), and the best overnight spot we found near Kimberley.
As the roosters crowed (quite literally, as some trailers were parked right by a chicken coop), day two began, taking us through Griekwastad and Groblershoop to Oranjerus: a gem along the Orange River near Kanoneiland. The road undulates through the Green Kalahari beyond Groblershoop. The Orange River, flowing at higher levels than usual past Oranjerus, presents an impressive sight.
This is a beautiful resort with large lawns,
