Land-Speed King Craig Breedlove Dies at Age 86

Craig Breedlove, the first land-speed racer to drive jet-powered cars over 400, 500, and then 600 mph, died April 4, at his home in Rio Vista, California, after a battle with cancer. He was 86.

Breedlove began his speed record journey as a young hot rodder in Southern California. He bought his first car, a 1932 Ford “deuce coupe,” at age 13. He owned a ’34 when he was of legal driving age and he throttled that hot rod coupe to 154 mph on dry lakes. He piloted
