Russell Sykes: new YCC chairman

CANARIES

RUSSELL Sykes arrived on the canary scene in 2021 as an unknown. A proud Yorkshireman, he had arranged to purchase some Yorkshire canaries, which he was eagerly awaiting. He pitched up at the YCC show in Saltaire in October 2021, as his first step to getting to know the hobby.

As fanciers chatted, it was evident Russ was something special. Already an experienced birdkeeper, keeping a few Fife canaries and a collection of mainly pied zebra finches, he had an eye for detail and a thirst for knowledge. He was well connected with local bird breeders of different varieties. A quiet, well-spoken individual and not one to boast, Russ divulged he was a champion whippet breeder (The Veredon Stud of show whippets) and an experienced specialist judge
