In May 1977, George Lucas went on holiday to Hawaii, to escape the delirium surrounding the release of Star Wars. Fellow director Steven Spielberg also happened to be there, taking a breather from Close Encounters. Spielberg said he wanted to make a Bond film next, but Lucas had an idea “better than James Bond”, and pitched his story for . Spielberg loved it, lauding it as “a James Bond film without the hardware”, though he had one small note. Instead of Indiana Smith, the hero should be called Indiana Jones.
