A STEAMY Romance

On 9 July and 6 August this year, rail enthusiasts will enjoy a spectacular round trip between York and Carlisle, following the Settle– Carlisle route, one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Britain, as at the head, locomotive No. 60103 – aka the Flying Scotsman – shrills and billows. Highlights will include views across the Fells to the Pennine peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, and the ascent of Ais Gill at the head of the Mallerstang valley, on the North Yorkshire-Cumbria border.

Meanwhile, train buffs on the valley floor can thrill to the sight of the legendary engine – resplendent in BR Brunswick Green – as the 70ft, 97-tonne behemoth clatters across the soaring Ribblehead Viaduct.
