RUBY WAX: CASTAWAY
Marooned in Madgascar
Screening: TVNZ 1, 8.30pm

Like so many people in comedy, Ruby Wax has not always been as bright and bubbly as she seems. Her 25-year battle with depression took a bad turn earlier this year when she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital – and then took the chance to tell her Instagram fans in a video from her hospital bed that her new book about mental health, , was screened in the UK. It’s essentially a reboot of , the show Joanna Lumley made in 1994, and Lumley herself drops in to offer advice before Wax departs. Stranded on a Madagascan island with only herself and some cameras for company, Wax does a lot of soul baring. Her social media followers responded with great empathy, the ’s writer called the two-part show “hilarious, moving and truthful” and the man from the deemed it “downright inexplicable”.
