TOP 20 GHIA COUPÉ

Having been in the VW scene since the 1980s, Jim Dix has been around the block, as it were, and has owned plenty of cars over the years. The more well-known ones amongst them are his Zwitter, the last Targa-top Beetle built by Thump! Thump! and his ’67 Cal Looker, built and owned for half a lifetime by former VolksWorld editor, Ivan McCutcheon. They’re all great cars, and many would be happy to have owned any one of them, but Jim decided a while ago that he wanted one car that was truly his.

“I’d wanted a Ghia for a long time, as I’d never owned one, but I was going back and forth between a Type 14 and Type 34,” says Jim.

Each has its own distinct following, the Type 14 being universally considered the prettier of the two, but the Type 34 is just so otherworldly, with-esque roof, thin pillars and acres of glass.
