BAGGING RIGHTS

When is a bag not just a bag? For the Fendi Baguette, its pop culture fate was sealed when’s Carrie Bradshaw, proclaimed “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette!” to a robber demanding her bag at gunpoint. The Fendi cruise 2023 show last September marked 25 years since that seminal moment and appropriately, Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini Fendi turned the occasion into a celebration of all things Baguette—and we do mean, all things. The duo turned the bag into every imaginable accessory and adornment. It was plastered onto beanies and gaiters and gloves, and swung from belts and necklaces. Even in original bag form, the Baguette has received a delightfully maximalist makeover. This vivid purple version sports five pockets on the front—each pocket its own little Baguette. And in true 2023 fashion, it can be worn by its original short strap, a new crossbody strap, or—if you really want to go full Gen-Z—as a belt bag.

For her pre-fall 2024 collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri took the show on the road and headed to the Big Apple. She made the French-American dialogue literal by splashing NYC landmarks like the Statue of Liberty onto classic, ladylike Dior silhouettes.
