On the Brink

THE European Games – the first qualifying event for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris – is underway in Poland.

As Boxing News went to press on Tuesday lunchtime, Charley Davison, the Tokyo Olympian from Lowestoft, and Rossie Eccles were one win away from qualifying for Paris.

Davison reached the quarter finals at 54kgs with a unanimous points win over Maria Molina Romero (Spain) on Monday in Krakow.

Davison, who competed at flyweight in Tokyo and was beaten in the last 16, repeatedly found the target with southpaw lefts to win every round on the five scorecards.

Eccles, meanwhile, reached the last eight at 66kgs with a 4-1 split decision win over (Italy) after a close bout fought at a high tempo throughout. The 2022 Commonwealth
