It was coined in 1939 by screenwriter Harry Hervey for a melodramatic Southern potboiler, was nabbed in 1950 for an unrelated hardboiled Joan Crawford vehicle, was the title of the last hit single for Visage in 1982 and was pastiched by Jim Jarmusch in his 2019 zomcom, The Dead Don’t Die.
