TOW VEHICLE ESC VERSUS CARAVAN ESC

LETTER OF THE MONTH

Hi,

Tow vehicle electronic sway control (ESC) versus caravan ESC … can you help since FORD Australia or three of its dealers couldn't answer my simple enquiry.

With reference to the next Gen Everest Trend with the touring pack and built-in trailer anti sway, how does this work in conjunction with my caravan's AL-KO ESC? Should I only use one or do they complement each other?

With a caravan connected, I assume the vehicle system detects sudden irregular steering input which then operates the trailer brakes and possibly the vehicle brakes. Whereas the caravan ESC generally has a yaw sensor attached to the floor in the middle of the van, if trailer sway is detected it applies the trailer brakes, hence the vehicle system is totally independent.

Regards, Dave
