The Spontex Car Sponge

Washing your car in the 1950’s was basically the same process as today but one possible contender in to what could be called a ‘designer’ sponge in its day was the Spontex Cellulose Car Sponge as marketed by Sponcel Ltd of London and Swansea.

The possible ‘designer’ aspect was due to its shape – flat one side, the actual washing side – with the other being curved so that it ‘fits comfortably into the hand so you can now get at those awkward places, radiator grilles, behind door handles, etc.’ which possibly made such a big difference when washing their pride and joy.
