Choosing hardy plants

We look at plants that provide shape and texture in a border

ALTHOUGH a well-planned perennial border aims to provide colour harmony, there are certain hardy plants that are not seen at their best when in close association with others. Colour alone is by no means the criterion by which a border should be judged, nor for that matter should individual kinds be rated solely on the colour display they make in their season.

With some of the brightest flowers this can be all too brief, but with subjects that have claim to shape or form that complement the flowers, the blooms can sometimes be regarded as secondary. This is especially true of those that have bold
