Cultural load can be defined in different ways. For me as a Wiradjuri woman, it’s the load of having to explain and educate others in Aboriginal* cultures, identities and ways of thinking and being. It can be the load of having to choose the “right” terminology to speak about Aboriginal communities that is accepted by everyone (there isn’t really one). It’s the load of trying to educate but not pretend to speak on behalf of everyone. (Here, I am speaking from my own personal, lived experience and some of my fellow design practitioners.) It’s the load that we carry, when bringing work into our communities, to make sure that we (and you) act in ways that will not put our Elders, families and friends in harm’s way.
