STO Postcards
Postcards were first introduced in 1870 and offered cheaper postage for short messages, but at first only the official postal stationery cards were allowed at the reduced rate. Following complaints from the stationery trade, STO for private cards was introduced on 10 June 1872 (use of adhesives on plain unstamped cards was not allowed until 1 September 1894). The rules required that only the standard wording be printed on the front (which was reserved for the address), although the
