The reason many sailors anchor in the village of Cawsand is they are taking shelter from the westerly winds while waiting for an easterly to push them down the Channel towards Falmouth.
In the days before engines, some people became so desperate to get out the Channel that they would simply drift with the currents when they flowed west for six hours, then anchor for six hours when they turned east, then drift again when they turned west, repeating the cycle until either the wind turned
