There is something special about a tractor that has been modified to take a six-cylinder engine. If that tractor happens to be a Leyland, then as a fan of the marque I believe it requires close scrutiny!
Nuffield, Leyland, and Marshall enthusiast Graeme Morrow is the owner of this tractor. He and his brother, David, have built a six-cylinder tractor based on a Leyland 802, that has been fitted with a Leyland 6/98 ‘Power Systems’ engine that has been turbocharged. This has created a tractor that the Morrows have dubbed a Leyland 1302 – due to its output of 130hp and the two-wheel drive configuration.
The two brothers, from Carland near Dungannon, in Co. Tyrone, will be familiar to Tractor & Machinery readers, as they have previously featured in the magazine with a complete collection of the Golden Harvest range of Leyland tractors.
Graeme and David both have a great fondness for six-cylinder-powered Nuffield, Leyland, and Marshall tractors. Their passion was passed down from their father, the late Jack Morrow, who in the early ’70s converted quite a few Nuffield tractors with such engines.
Graeme recalled that Jack’s first conversion was a Nuffield 460 model that he fitted with a BMC 5.1-litre, six-cylinder engine. The purpose of this conversion was to get more power to drive a double-chop forage harvester.
Several Nuffield 10/60s were converted in the following years, fitted with BMC 5.7-litre engines to gain more power. The first 10/60 to be converted by Jack has been fully restored and forms part of the brothers’ collection.
The final tractor that Jack upgraded to six-cylinder power was a Leyland 270. This was fitted with a Leyland 6/98 engine.
The experience gleaned from their father provided the Morrows with
