THE sale of Modern British and Irish paintings at Chiswick Auctions in west London last month included a healthy sprinkling of lots by female artists, many of which were among the best sellers. Being neither a woman nor an artist, and having been too young in the 1950s to be able to form a judgement on such things, I only suggest that the comments in a catalogue note for Prunella Clough (1919–99) might overstate the difficulties, at least as far as she was concerned.
