When I was a child in the early 1980s, hanging baskets represented the height of gardening glamour. In my hometown in Devon, local shops and pubs competed for coveted accolades from the local council and Britain in Bloom. I was drawn to the bright colours of the bedding plants – lipstick-red pelargoniums, pink petunias and orange African marigolds. There was little attention paid to a harmonious palette, but to my eye it was polychromatic horticultural heaven – I was hooked on hanging baskets. Ever since, I’ve always found space for a hanging planter.
