TRAVEL Barcelona

It could happen anywhere. It could be walking along Barcelona's promenade when a blitz of roller skaters wash past you in giddy unison.
Or maybe it's while you're exploring Ciutadella Park and discovering all the different dance sessions, from salsa to tango and everything in between. Maybe it's on the Passeig de Lluís Companys when you notice the jugglers and slackliners deep in the flow of their passion. Or it might be on a late-afternoon walk through the Gothic Quarter when the sun drips down those centuries-old walls like honey, and you pass from one incredible street musician to the next It could happen anywhere, but at some point, you begin to realise Barcelona is a city at play.
It's in the creative fusion of their tapas and their long list of fantastical cocktails in speakeasies hidden in the back of laundromats and pastrami joints. It's in the performances at the stunning Palau de la Música where the orchestra plays Vivaldi one night music the next It's in the way that nobody seems to be working (if they're not at a fiesta, they're having a siesta), and you know what, it's even in how they play their soccer. Barcelona, with a Mediterranean breeze that takes the sting out of city life and a history that teaches you that nothing ever lasts (they've seen their fair share of fallen empires), is a port city that knows life is too short and beautiful to take seriously.
