TODAY, many species of foreign birds are becoming scarce in aviculture. A century ago, the trend was the other way: the foreign fancy was gaining ground. The adverts in Cage Birds show the huge range of species available to buy, yet the exhibition side wasn't keeping up. We figured this was a growth area and energetically talked up foreign birds and, especially, the showing of them. Some very able (and well-heeled) fanciers backed our campaign and in 1923 two shows in particular
