V Ws have a habit of getting under your skin, and not just because they are loveable and full of character, but also because they seem very humanistic. It’s not just Jim Douglas in the Herbie films this feeling rubbed off on, there are millions of us around the world. And this month we’re heading to Denmark, to catch up with Tomas Nielsen, who clearly feels the same way as the rest of us about wanting to save old and neglected VWs, regardless of the hardships that might be involved in the process. You see, Tomas has owned this ’57 Oval twice, selling it in 2018, only to then buy it back again two years later when he agreed to build a car in secret to debut at this year’s VolksWorld Show.
The car needed a lot of work as it had changed hands several times during the intervening period and, while it may never have been given the love it deserved, it was at least kept inside his friendship circle.
