What are we to make of this year’s weather? Last year I bet I didn’t have to use my pasture topper more than twice all year. Aren’t I glad I spent some time repairing it last winter? It has been in almost constant use ever since spring. Now in August, we have more grass than I can ever remember, and I am out topping at least once a week to keep the grass down to a manageable height for the sheep.

If it gets too high, it flops over and they just walk over it and it gets sour and spoilt, around about a couple of inches seems to suit them best. Also, the wet has suited the clover and, with this amount going through them, to put it mildly, it has a laxative effect on the guts. We are constantly catching them up to clean mucky back ends and even with all this attention, we are still getting fly strikes quite regularly.
