Two Christmas Pageants

On the first Saturday in December, I hurried downtown with my sisters to see the Santa Claus parade. Santa stopped on the square and handed out small bags containing hard candy, chocolates, an orange, and peanuts, walnuts and pecans (all in their shells). I was so happy to have candy to take home to Daddy.

During Decembers in Fredonia, Kan., trees are bare and shiver in the cold. Evenings creep in sooner. My big brother Douggie brought the coal stove into the front room to help keep us warm.
