MEET OUR COVER ARTIST, SALLI SWINDELL

Where do you live and what do you make? I live in a small town south of Cleveland, Ohio, where the long, chilly, dark winters make it super easy to cosy up and draw. I create all sorts of colourful illustrations – meditative abstract landscapes, yummy food illustrations, wherever my mind takes me on any given day. How’d your career start? Although I graduated with a degree in Fashion Illustration, it didn’t feel like the right fit. When I was hired as a line designer at American Greetings (one of the world’s largest greeting card companies) I felt I had finally found a place where I could learn and grow. I worked there for 10 wonderful years. My career as a freelance illustrator began the minute I left American Greetings and has continued to flourish. My brother Nate Padavick and I became business partners in the 2000s. We have built many creative communities – TheyDraw, Illustrators For Hire, The Illustrator’s Circle – and our founding principle “to promote and showcase the work of illustrators all around the world” continues to inform all our decisions. What’s your favourite way to spend time? When I’m not in my studio, I can be found hiking one of the beautiful trails near my house, cutting veggies for my vegan lifestyle or caring for our 19-year-old cat. Where can we see more?
