“Are we in Asia yet?” asked Dorothy, the huge excitement of our impending crossing of the Bosphorus almost too much for her to contain. She and older brother, Harrison, had spent the past hour looking out of the windows, eagerly awaiting the moment when they would be able to spot the bridge.
They didn’t have to wait much longer – less than five minutes, in fact – until the imposing arches of Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge appeared in front of us. The bridge crosses the Bosphorus Strait, which forms the divide between Asia and Europe, as well as being the entry point for the Black Sea. This alone makes it a hugely important body of water, given that it means Turkey has control of all of the maritime traffic entering and leaving the Black Sea. As we made our way across the bridge, a glance to the right and we could see down to Istanbul and a flurry of ships
