Hearing that you've been bumped up to business class, is quite possibly the best way to start any trip, and Air Austral knows it. With champagne in hand, followed by a three-course meal, my four-hour flight barely feels like a haul across the sky. My task now? To eat my way through the island of La Réunion.

I meet my tour guide, Sully Chaffre from Ethnix Tours Voyages, at Réunion’s Roland Garros Airport. I don’t speak a lick of French - luckily, he knows a little of every language.
