IT’S DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE a place and a vibe that could be further from ‘country style’ than New York City. Maybe Tokyo? Regardless, it was the Big Apple that I chose as my holiday destination in April this year. I first visited in 1999 and instantly fell in love with New York – mostly because of the city’s go-go-go energy. After my children were born, it was the one place I wanted us to visit together, and finally at 16 and 18, my girls had reached the perfect ages.

I also wanted to see if Manhattan still had its palpable energy after enduring 9/11 and, more recently, COVID. Ultimately, I guess I wanted to see if I still loved NY.

After landing at Newark Airport in New Jersey and taking the subway to Penn Station, we quickly dropped our bags at the hotel and headed to Times Square. It was late afternoon and the lights were starting to come on. People were heading to dinner and then a Broadway
