Texas twisters ZZ Top recently completed tour dates with southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd, in a double bill strafed with hot guitar licks and at the lyric end, steeped in hard rock Americana. As for La Futura, who knows? Possibly a fresh new ZZ Top album with the band’s new bassist and genius gearhead, Elwood Francis, stage right to Billy “The Reverend” Gibbons, where Dusty Hill once danced.

“We were fortunately able to pull it to the curb in anticipation of our exchange today. Thanks for taking the time to ring up, man.” So resonated the dulcet tones of Gibbons, as Goldmine caught up with the blues rock legend, representing the Texas nexus of the otherwise Jacksonville bill.

Commenting on the historic tour, Billy figures, “The good news, we’ve been friends with the Skynyrd outfit since day one. A little-known fact: We gave Lynyrd Skynyrd one of their first paying gigs way, way back. We had them jump aboard and that was way down south in South Carolina or somewhere down there; I wouldn’t hazard a guess at this
