Union soldiers gaze south across the Pamunkey River in Virginia from their camp at Cumberland Landing. The northernmost of the 11 Confederate states, Virginia was a key battleground throughout the war, especially when the city of Richmond replaced Montgomery, Alabama, as the Confederate capital.
