SEA CHANGE

This issue will be the last edition of Fishing World published by Yaffa Publishing. In the future, editor Scott Thomas has bought the brand, and while focusing on growing the digital platforms, will hopefully will be doing some paper editions as well.

In this era of online platforms, many monthly-based paper magazines are no longer financially viable. Readers and advertisers want instant access to information, and every time I go into a newsagents the magazine shelves are slowly becoming depleted. For me it is a sad time, I am 64 years old, about to retire and I looked forward to a few more years of writing for this magazine. It has been a major part of my life for over 38 years. In this piece allow me to be retrospective.

I started writing for in 1985 after a chance meeting with Ron Calcutt, the original editor. Prior to that I had been an avid reader. The magazine originally was called “Australian Angler” and was owned and run by Ron. At the time, unlike now, magazines such as this were the main form of communication for the recreational fishing industry. There was definitely no immediacy at this time. Copy I wrote in June would hit the shelves was at the forefront of innovation and change for anglers around the country.
