The British keyboard player and producer Sebastian Reynolds just released his debut album „Canary“ on which he draws inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, blending the claustrophobic dystopia of Thom Yorke‘s „The Eraser,“ the fusion of Asian instruments and electronics akin to Four Tet and Susumu Yokota, and the haunting, alien spaciousness reminiscent of Vangelis and Jóhann Jóhannsson‘s film scores. This music is embedded in an exciting concept around spirituality and meditation. Sebastian told us the details.
Beat / Did you have a specific vision for the album or did the individual pieces emerge from each moment?
I think quite early on it seemed like a theme was emerging as the tracks started to come together. I have so much unfinished material in my archive that it can take quite a bit of work to decide on what songs feed into a musical journey for the listener. Just so it doesn‘t feel like a mixtape or a few randomly put
