WHEN DIFFERENCES RUN DEEP

THE holiday season is supposed to be about relaxing and spending quality time with loved ones. But for Kyle*, family get-togethers over the festive season are not something he looks forward to. He’s been openly gay for almost 10 years, and although his parents struggled with it at first, they now accept him for who he is. But there are members of his extended family who are still disapproving, he says.

“I don’t see them often because I moved to a different province for work about eight years ago,” Kyle (32) says. “But I’ll be visiting my parents for New Year’s and I just know I’m going to get that question from one of my aunts about when I’m bringing a nice girl home.
