I visit family in eastern Europe, I’m always f labbergasted at how well they ’ve maintained their longstanding company car. Used mainly for long commutes to and from their workplace, this 2006 BMW X5 3.0d has munched the motorways with a jaw-dropping 650,000 miles (over one million kilometres!). In its life it’s had no fewer than four replacement turbochargers, but it’s still on the original engine and automatic gearbox – although the latter oil and filters have been renewed every 50,000 miles which is better than adhering to the ‘sealed for life’ recommendation you’d hear at a main dealership.
