1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 – Sold £32,063

Probably of most interest to us was this ex-Car of the Year from 2004, which re-emerged last year under the ownership of American car fan Mike Churchill, who has previously been in Car of the Year with his Mark IV Continental. Looking every bit as good as when it won Car of the Year two decades ago, someone bid wisely and got themselves a bargain for £32k. Or did they? There’s no disputing the incredible quality of the restoration on this car, but the colour, the era (beginning of the smog era malaise) and the fact it’s a Mercury Cougar, rather than an iconic Mustang, all must have conspired to allow to sell for such a bargain price.
