My Bown Autocycle was made in Tonypandy, Wales, in 1953. In 2019, I managed to pry it away from my childhood friend, after it had been laid up for nigh-on 50 years, during which time it had been passed down through members of his family. I had an early recollection of the machine, having a vivid memory of standing next to it as a toddler in the 1950s and not really believing I would be allowed so close to a road-going vehicle!

The Bown was in poor condition when it came to me and had been off the road for years, but the ‘big bits’ looked to be largely all there and I hoped the small ones could possibly be found in the accompanying large box… My plan was to ‘dry build’ it and have a working engine,
