Queerplatonic relationships are transforming our understanding of intimacy

Who’s your emergency contact? Maybe your partner, or your mum? What about your gay bestie, the one you asked to come with you to the dentist? The one you can’t even go to Lidl without facetiming?

If so, you might be in a queer platonic relationship. While passionate, intense friendships between people of the same gender have been recognised for centuries – historically, they’ve been known as ‘romantic friendships’ – the term “queer platonic relationship” first appeared in asexual communities in the early 2010s.
