In 2017, the film Loving Vincent was released to much acclaim for its unique oil-painted animation style, enjoying critical and commercial applause. Fresh from their success, husband and wife co-directors Hugh and DK Welchman embarked on a follow-up film created using the same experimental format, once again fusing live-action footage with 2D animation and CGI for The Peasants.

Adapted from Władysław Reymont’s original Nobel Prize-winning novel, the film follows the travails
